History

Howard County was created on April 17,1873.  Howard County emerged from the midst of Hempstead, Sevier, Polk and Pike Counties.  A re-constructionist state government in the Nineteenth General assembly passed Act 57, April 17, 1873, taking townships from these four counties to construct Howard County.

Howard County was named for a James H. Howard, senator from the Seventeenth District which then included Pike, Sevier, and Clark Counties.  He had won office with the backing of Governor Powell Clayton as the "Radical Republicans" came to power in Arkansas in 1867.

Howard was the son of James H. Howard, born in Tennessee about 1838, who emigrated to Arkansas about 1853 and settled at Center Point.  James Howard learned a shoemaker's trade and married Rebecca J. Dossey in Madison Township.

Center Point was the original county seat.  In 1905 the county seat was moved to Nashville.  The Arkansas & Louisiana Railroad ran from Hope to Nashville.  The present day courthouse was built in 1938.

Howard County Arkansas is made up of 384,000 acres of which Weyerhaeuser Company owners 189,000 acres.  There are four incorporated cities in Howard County.

  • Dierks (originally called Hardscramble)

  • Mineral Springs (originally known as Saline)

  • Nashville (known earlier as Mine Creek and Hell's Valley)

  • Tollette (known as Blackland Township)

Smaller unincorporated communities:

  • Saratoga (known as Crackers Neck)

  • Umpire was named for a baseball game between Galens & Bethel.  Billy Faulkner, from Mena, was the "Umpire".

  • Athens (first known as Athens, then Venetia Grove, Ft Logan and then Athens)

Farming was the main source of income, the major crops were cotton, corn, peaches and cattle.  Now, Howard County has several large industries that provide approximately 4,500 jobs.  The major industries are:

  • Frigidare Home Products

  • James Hardy Gypsum

  • Jan-Eze Planting

  • Mission Plastics

  • Pilgrims Pride

  • Tyson

  • Trucking Industries

  • Weyerhaeuser Company

  • Oxbodies
